Most Popular Swimwear Trends of 2012

2012 is here, and with it come the hottest new swimwear trends straight off the runway! Here are the most popular trends for swimsuits and bikinis in 2012.

Polka-dots

The polka dot trend is in again in 2012, and it rocks because of two reasons. If you walk into any store, the chances of you finding a polka dot swimsuit are really high. No matter what designer you prefer (or don't) you're sure to find a style you like in every collection out there!

Polka dot swimwear is great because it can look classy and vintage when worn as a one-piece, and fun and upbeat when worn as a bikini or a 2 piece swimsuit. Any way you choose to wear it is fine, because vintage is also another trend in 2012, and fun colors are in for spring!

Balconette Swimsuit Top

The balconette bra is making a comeback! The first balconette was designed in 1938 in the United States and the design continued to sell well into the 1980's.

A balconette swimsuit top can provide essential support if you have a larger bust. So if you are looking for comfort AND style, you can thank Bottega Veneta and Victoria's Secret for deciding that bringing the balconette bra would be a good idea.

The Greek Twist One-Piece

The Greek Twist

There are 2 things about this one-piece that contributed to it's popularity. It's slimming shape, and bright color. Since it seems that bright colors "color block" is here to stay, you should take advantage of the trend and buy a one-piece that's also fun. The Greek twist is slimming because it creates the illusion of a slimmer waist and elongates the torso.

Strap Bandage Swimsuit

Strap Bandage Swimsuit

Max Azaria really seems to like bandage type swimsuits for 2012. Their 2012 collection is full of them, and other companies are following in their footstep.

If you like this trend, you have to be extremely careful if you order online. If you do not get a good fit in an excessively strappy bikini or swimsuit you'll get that dreaded "muffin top" look. Except in multiple places. Yikes. Choose a size that's tight enough to resist the waves (especially if you purchase a 2 piece bikini) yet loose enough to be comfortable.

Retro and Mod Swimsuits

Retro and Mod

The biggest trend of 2012 for swimsuits seems to contradict the equally powerful color block theme. Black and white.

Chanel and Michael Kors runways were full of black and white, mod and retro styles respectively. While Chanel went for a more polished and high-fashion pool side look; Michael Kors decided to try retro black and white.

Either way we look at it, these two styles are both winners. Black and white is a no-fail combination and will visually slim you down! Thank you designers! :)
