How To Rock A One Piece Swimsuit
So you’re not exactly a bikini loving gal. Or maybe you are, and you just want to try out something new! A one-piece bathing suit is what you might be looking for. If you want to ditch your bikini and learn how to rock a hot summer trend, you’ve come to the right place.
There are some clear examples of what not to do with a one piece. Let's begin with the picture below.
- 2012 Bikini and Swimsuit Trends
2012 is here, and with it come the hottest new swimwear trends straight off the runway! Here are the most popular trends for swimsuits and bikinis in 2012.
Don't Do This
Why? Details In Unwanted Places
You don’t want a one piece that has a lot of detailing an patterns around the waist and tummy area because this will create the illusion that you are fuller in those regions that you really are. Avoid big details like in the picture, it will only draw unwanted attention to that area.
Instead, choose something that minimizes detailing in those areas and focuses on areas that you need help. Let’s say you have a smaller bust. Get a one-piece that has accent pieces, such as ruffles, in your chest area. If you need to look slimmer, black, of course it the best way to go. However if you want some color, a navy or dark purple will work just as well! If you're going to be hanging out by the pool, I suggest buying a pair of wedges instead of the traditional flip flops. They'll give you the extra height and will force you to stand up straight which will give your body a more streamlined look. Try something more along the lines of the picture below.
Much Better
One Pieces That Instantly Slim You!
Another rule of thumb to keep in mind with one-pieces is that keeping a swimsuit one color (especially black) will instantly slim you! When you add to many colors and detailing that fills you out, because the colors will contrast. Keeping a one piece in one color is the ideal way to wear a swimsuit like that. Look at the difference between the pictures. The simple colored one is slimming. The picture below is an example of what a overly detailed one piece swimsuit can do to even a fit model. (Although it does look nice, we have to give it that.) The detailing and flush of contrasting colors fill her in in all the wrong places.
Not The Best Idea
A simple and nicely cut one color, one piece swimsuit, like the ones below, will prove to be much better. A good thing to remember for all occasions is that if you are trying to find an outfit that will slim you down, you should always go for something that is the same color from top to bottom. This is why a little black dress flatters everybody! It's black, and it's one color!

A White One Piece?
There is an exception to this “one color” rule. White is not the best color to work with when dealing with a one-piece swimsuit (or any bikini or swimsuit for that matter). Just as black can instantly slim you, it’s polar opposite will add on the pounds. White is an amazing color to wear if you are very fit, (or very slim). It will create a good proportion, but if you are going for a slimming effect, take white off of your shopping list.
Although White Looks Pretty. It Will Visually Fill You In. Avoid
The BEST One-Piece Ever Invented
Sometimes you will see women wearing swimsuits and bikinis that are white on top and black on the bottom, and I have to add here, that whoever came up with that idea is a genius designer! If black slims and white fills you in, then why not put black on bottom to slim your thighs and tummy, and add white on top to fill out and accentuate your chest. Brilliant.
The Best Of Both Worlds
How To Accessorize A One Piece Swimsuit
There are a lot of other ways to draw attention to a simple one-piece (good attention!). When you keep your swimsuit simple, you can afford to go all out with accessories. Take a long dangly necklace in a contrasting color (as long as your swimsuit is not brown, this should be fine). Purchase a pair of feathery earrings or something else dangly. Avoid a lot of metal earrings because sea salt humidity will react with the metal, leaving you with green ears. Not cool. Take some tips from these celebs. They may not be at the beach, but they are an example for good accessories.
Add A Statement Necklace
A good idea for a necklace is also something that isn’t metal, so you avoid staining on your bathing suit. It’s generally a good idea to avoid going in the water with the necklace and earrings but you can if you want. If you are planning a day at the beach with minimal water exposure, then this is perfect for you. The necklace below is made of mainly stone, plastic, wood, and it’s colorful and fun. Perfect.
