Is Walmart Good For America?

If we define America as “consumers” and we ask ourselves if Walmart is good for America, then the answer is yes. Somewhere between the low prices, competition, wide variety of products, and efficiency, Walmart proves to be more beneficial than not, to consumers.

Walmart has an extremely influential say in what manufacturers make and how much they sell it for, and I mean extremely influential. Even though that sounds like bad news to the manufacturer (and it IS) we are strictly talking about the great benefit to the consumer. Walmart is like Target, and K-Mart, they are no different in terms of the products they sell. The only exception here is that Walmart happens to be the biggest mass distributor out there. Walmart buys in bulk and haggles for every penny they can pull from the manufacturer in order to obtain the product for a lower price. This is the reason why a Snickers bar costs $0.75 at Target, and $0.50 at Walmart. Same product. Same quality. Different prices. Yes, Walmart may in fact be aggressive in demanding items at low prices but this creates competition among other big retailers and after all, what customer doesn’t want huge companies to fight over who can bring him the lower price?

Walmart is a very efficient “one-stop-shop” for many people. Gone are the days where one needs to travel to the corner store to find canned tuna, and to the other side of town to find a new pair of jeans. Welcome to Walmart. With thousands upon thousands of items conveniently packed into one room, consumers can grab, buy, and save time.

So Walmart is good for America, but let’s remember that the technicalities of the situation do not stop there. While consumers in the United States benefit, there are people overseas who work way below minimum wage for Walmart and companies (one who may even employ you), who are getting a bad deal for their product, or at least what they think is a bad deal. Ultimately as long as you make a profit, the deal is good. Greed is the issue there. Someone else can address that.
